My background has primarily been in riding young competition horses in all three disciplines. I worked as a rider for a number of well respected professionals and as such my competition experience has almost exclusively been on young horses. I’ve competed successfully up to 1.30 show jumping, elementary dressage (trained and ridden to prix st George level non-competitively) and to BE novice eventing (training at intermediate). I am currently out competing regularly on my own and clients horses and have regular training with renowned, top level coaches. I am truly passionate about always improving and developing my own performance and knowledge.
Alongside the riding, I began and developed a real love of teaching around 2011 and qualified as a BHSII in 2013. Helping people to feel good about riding, enjoy their horse and achieve their goals (whatever they may be) is my main ambition as a coach and trainer. I believe in building my clients’ confidence and helping to build their horses’ confidence in return. I’m passionate about correct fundamental training to help your horse enjoy their work and stay sound and well.
Above all, I know what it’s like to work hard and invest so much of your time, energy, money and heart into your horse, and I love helping clients to get enjoyment, success and happy horses in return.
I have competed in a range of disciplines over the years, producing horses to Adv Med BD, BE100 eventing, intermediate team chasing & Inter B working equitation. My obsession with horses started at a young age and never waned, though I was never inclined to follow any sort of standardised pathway. I have always enjoyed learning, and questioning what I see and experience. This has lead to a broad knowledge base and training with a range of trainers over the years to hunt down answers that I could not find in more mainstream equestrian avenues.
I have also never found myself drawn to the "ideal" equines for sport, coupled with not coming from a horsey or wealthy background, I have spent most of my life working with horses who have had their own problems, be it behavioural, conformational, or due to poor training or injury. Again, this has served to feed my need for knowledge and lead me into finding yet more ways to work with and help these horses.
I have a deep rooted passion for dressage, based not in competing but in how it can benefit both horse and rider. Thanks to my own wonderful Fell pony stallion, Pea, I was eventually lead to Working Equitation. I wanted something a little more lively and fun for us both to try, and this served to not only utilise his existing dressage skills, but enhance them. After becoming involved with WE with Pea, I saw how this discipline had so much to offer both horses and riders, in terms of training opportunities. The goals of working equitation are to produce such a wonderfully well rounded horse, with suppleness, balance, bravery, obedience, responsiveness and relaxation... what is not to love?
My goals are always to train both rider and horse both the benefit of both. To seek clarity, balance and understanding.
I enjoy teaching a range of other topics also, including ground work, in hand work, rider Biomechanics, polework, test riding and more.
JP hunted and did polo x with the pony club as a child. After leaving school the first horse he had to produce to sell, never sold and went on to do both Badminton and Burghley long and short format, going clear XC each time. He also produced others to intermediate level before they were sold on. At dressage JP has competed to Advanced Medium and won at this level. He then turned to show jumping and has produce all his own from young horses right up to winning at world ranking level. And is just starting out again with a team of young horses. JP aims to produce horses that are relaxed and like their job, and feels if they are happy and relaxed they will give you their best and try for you. He has trained with many top trainers, Carl Hester. Betina and Andrew Hoy. Ken Clawson.
